It’s a cold windy dawn on the great western plains
as a lone trooper rides along slowly.
His breakfast was hardtack and barely cooked beans
and he couldn’t be feelin’ more lowly.
But he thinks of his sweethearts. He has quite a few
spread round this country so fair.
And he hopes that each one is wearin a ribbon
of Cavalry gold in her hair.
He ticks off their names as he covers the miles,
He’s sad that they must be apart.
‘Course, most of ‘em he never met face to face,
but each one is dear to his heart.
There’s stunning Miss Rocky and sweet Allie Mo
To name just a few of the bunch.
And then Stumble Leena and dear Antety
Strong girls who stand true in a crunch
Caliope Cupcake and young Holy Terror
And Cortez’s own Shotgun Shell
And Tornado Alli and Nellie Blue too
And all of those Carolina Belles
So many cowgirls and so many miles,
with each hoofbeat he thinks of one more.
They’re the jewels of the West and the sun on his back
and that’s what the trooper fights for
So he trots along spritely, his spirits are buoyed
as he watches the tumbleweeds play.
He’s dang proud that he knows all those ladies of SASS.
Yup, it ain’t a bad Valentines Day.
