From Dublin they came
And from Belfast and Cork
To the land of the streets paved with gold
The reality though
Left them lonely and poor
Many suffered in hunger and cold
But they struggled for years
And they helped build a nation
The 69th Regiment fought
Through those four years of Hell
They stood by their banner
Gave their lives up with nary a thought
"Faugh A Ballagh!"
they would shout as they charged
And the Irish lost some of their best
At the end of the horror
Many fine Irish lads
Turned their horses and dreams to the west
There were cattle to herd
And new towns to build
And those fellas were up to the task
And they worked till they bled
And they helped tame the land
Peace and freedom was all that they asked
So I’ll raise up a glass
To those lads who wore green
And who bravely charged into the fray
Your new country salutes you
You brave Irish lads
Bless the sons of St. Patrick today
