Lawrence Edward Thorp Sr., age 62 of Luther, passed away Friday June 3, 2011 in Cadillac. He was born January 16, 1949 to Ned Thorp and Junette Unger and was a 1967 graduate of Big Rapids High School. On June 3, 1967 he was married in Luther to Joann Joyce Borton who survives. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1970-72 and in the Air National Guard from 1972-76. He found work as a cowboy on a New Mexico ranch from 1972-74 and was employed in Tucumcari, New Mexico as a city policeman from 1974-77. In 1977 he returned to the Luther area and went to work in the woods for Clarence Flynn before becoming employed with General Motors Company as a car hauler where he worked for over 25 years. He was a member of S.A.S.S. (Single Action Shooting Society) and was known affectionately to them as “3Es” or “Greeenriver”.

He is survived by his wife Joann Thorp of Luther, sons Larry (Christine) Thorp Jr. of Hersey, James (Ashley) Thorp of Graham, N.C., daughter Jody (Scott) Lucas of Luther, brother Albert (Carol) Thorp of Big Rapids, 4 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Ned and Junette Thorp, and his brother Eugene Thorpe.

Funeral services will be 12:00 PM Wednesday June 8, 2011 at the Luther Lions Club. Burial will be at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Luther at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the family and envelopes will be available at the Lions Club where friends may call 10:30 A.M. Wednesday June 8, 2011 until service time.
