His young man's soul burned with a deep smoldering fire
And he tried hard to let it burn out.
But it just wouldn't cool as his heart fanned the flames.
So it grew and filled him with desire.

His Ma called him foolish and begged him to stay.
Most of his friends didn't know.
But his Pa understood for he'd felt it himself.
But he wasn't sure just what to do or to say.

The young girl he loved thought he'd soon come around.
No doubt he would settle down here.
And stop staring at mountains not even in view.
He was born and for sure he would die in this town.

But the fire would not die and as time passed it grew
till he felt that he could not endure
the heat that consumed him as he tempered like steel.
And he stared at those peaks that weren't even in view.

So the time passed, the fire burned and he grew within
And none understood him at all.
Sometimes they would see him just outside of town.
He would stand facing West with his heart in the wind.

He was just a young lad but somehow he knew
that his life would not play in this town.
And the day that he left, he held his head high
As he rode toward those mountains that weren't even in view.
