A coyote trots along the arroyo rim
Just before sunset
When the moon comes up he’ll sing his song
He’s not ready yet

He will be soon

Looking out at the desert stretched before me
I feel excited and alive
Sometimes you search your entire life
And never quite arrive

At the place you were meant to be

Maybe just for a moment
Your soul can finally feel
A truth, or just a glimpse
Of what is truly real

And your life might change

Heat waves in the distance shimmer
And magically blur the land
A cactus provides scarce shade
Upon a tiny spot of sand

The shade seems welcome, but out of place

Faint wagon tracks stretch away
Laid down by pioneers.
The landscape looked the same to them
as they tried to suppress their fears

Through this place of discovery and revelation

The desert freezes at night
No loving trees to contain the heat
The day’s fire rises to the stars
An amazing, impossible feat

The cycle repeats itself for eons

A coyote trots along the arroyo rim
Just before the sun rises
When the moon come up he’ll sing again
The desert holds no surprises

If it’s in your soul

The Desert
