“If you ain’t got a horse and a rope and a hat,
Then you just ain’t no cowboy”, he said
And some of us smiled and some of us didn’t
Some of us nodded our heads

And later I sat down to think on his words
Of course what he said was quite true
“At least in the way that he meant it”, I thought
But there might be another thing too

A Cowboy is more than a wrangler these days
The word has more meaning it seems
It’s a symbol of strength, and courage, and heart
It represents all our best dreams

So here’s to the Cowboys who never will ride
But who stand up to all of life’s storms
Like the young man who breaks his back working two jobs
So his family can stay safe and warm

And the Fireman who runs through the smoke and the flames
Just to save us when death grabs our hand
And the coach of the little league team in your town
And the Salvation Army’s brass band

Here’s to the fellas who wear Green Berets
And work through the dark lonely night
On ice covered peaks and in hot desert Hell
They cowboy up for the fight

The cop on the beat who works Christmas each year
While his wife awaits his safe return
And the old high school teacher who everyone loves
Just because he makes kids want to learn

If you look all around you, you’ll find one or two
Call them everyday cowboys I guess
Strong loyal men with no horse and no saddle
But their hearts are America’s best

You don’t measure a man by his boots, hat, and spurs
But by if his heart’s loyal and true
So we use the word “Cowboy” in the best way we can
And I’m glad to have met one or two

Everyday Cowboys
